I went along to one of the activist / anarchist centres that are organising the G20 protests next week.

Starting with a little small talk: There was some disappointment that Stop The War’s march is going from the US Embassy to Trafalger square instead of to the City of London where the Banks are. And Obama is arriving at Stanstead which has the largest runway in Britain. I piped in with general advice, the tubes and busses will be canceled people won’t be able to meet at the rendevous points, and Obamas probable helicopter trip will be accompanied by decoy helicopters. Anyway I felt assured I was in non violent company, indeed past experience has taught me it is the police who are violent.

I returned a few hours later for a couple of planned workshops:

Meetings have been going on for weeks in preparation. But tonight was quiet and no one wanted to talk into a microphone or be filmed.

This was a Trauma meeting. There will be chill out zones on the day, and people might appear having suffered police violence or similar, and so how to treat them.

The meeting was informal and chaired by a very capable lady who was also writing her dissertation. Rather than my notes here is a screenshot from a web site they used last year:

This is a picture of the building from Rampart’s website, where the meeting took place:

And this is an excerpt from their last post March 25th:

Howdy crusties!

Crazy days are approaching as the preparations for the G20 protests are steaming up and here at rampART we cannot wait.

Despite some cheater that spread some false news on indymedia (watch yr back – our bounty killers are after you) the situation is under control and thanks to your solidarity the occupation of the building is running smoothly.

So join us on the ramparts as we build up towards the G20 protests. Come along to the g20 info cafes every day from 2 to 10pm, to know more about the protests,  prepare banners and placards, debate about what to do to make capitalism collapse faster, and get to know your new protest buddies.

Together with other social centres, squatters and housing groups rampART will join the Housing March (Black Procession) on the 1st of April.

Join us on the 360th anniversary of the Diggers at 11am at Cannon Street station together with thousands of other people who think that housing is a right and not a business and that is time to take back the space that bankers, bureaucrats, bailiffs, brownites, blairites, and other badasses have stolen from us.

A new study from Cornell University shows that television is responsible for the developed world’s rising rates of autism in children. If this is true, can parents and governments have any choice but to stop children watching it?
This summer White Dot ran two of our Zocalo events. We asked peoplein a neighbourhood of Brighton to put chairs outside their front doors and sit together for an evening instead of watching television. One family pulled out their entire sofa. The drinking wasn’t our idea, but it seemed to work..
White Dot is compiling an archive of memories and advice from the last generations to grow up without television. They have a complete set of social and parenting skills we are about to lose forever.
Help us pick their brains!

An enthusiastic wordpress blogger spreads the anarchism:

LONDON ANARCHISTS RESURGENT

Here’s an article I’ve written for the new FREEDOM G20 SPECIAL out on Friday:

March 24, 2009…9:43 pm

Only 12 months ago anarchism in London was in it’s usual torporific state….to have called it a ‘movement’ would have been to flout the Trade Descriptions Act. Any attempts at co-operation were restricted to the dreadfull ‘info share’ non event, navel gazing about whether community or workplace was the correct terrain of struggle and a complete absence of ambition that anything could be achieved or the dynamism to attain it. But now in the run up to the G20 events things have totally changed There are the beginnings of a movement that can create its own momentum. Posters, flyers and cards pour off print production lines – and are grabbed by hands eager to distribute them at markets and shopping centres. A major conference is set for early June, an e-mail discussion list is well used, Freedom Bookshop and LARC fulfil their roles as hubs of the movement. At least six local groups are established buoyed by the example of the Whitechapel anarchists who have shown that t is possible to produce a paper the punters will grab to read. On Sundays in Brick Lane up to 30 anarchists are distributing their paper – elsewhere flyer distribution reaches out to Stratford and Croydon. Plans for the G20 are ambitious. The G20 Meltdown event on April 1st aims to ‘Storm The Banks’ from four starting points. The Direct Action Bloc on the TUC march on the 28th March promises to be the biggest and best organised for years. On its arrival in Hyde Park there will be an anarchist rally as opposed to the soporific offerings from the official platform. Banners are made, sewing machines whirr from Croydon to Whitechapel fine stitching red and black flags.
