Israel reputedly caught arming Darfur Rebels

Mon, 02 Feb 2009 05:53:29 -0600
Summary:

Sudan’s state media has published a report alleging that it has caught the Israelis supplying weapons to Darfur’s Justice and Equality Movement — and Iran’s Press TV has hoist the petard into the Global Information Environment.

Unfortunately, no mention has been made of proof, but that could be simply because they’re new to the game. Press TV also “illustrated” the article with a picture of Israel bombing Gaza. This is not quite as duplicitous as CNN “illustrating” alleged Russian bombings of Georgia with Georgian bombings of South Ossetia, but it’s not exactly clean living either.

The JEM rebels are the guys who attacked the Chinese-run oilfield, in central Sudan, a couple of years ago. Last May they actually attacked Khartoum.

These guys should not be confused with Minni & His Merry Band of Men, who made peace with Khartoum last October.

Last we checked, China had a controlling of Sudan’s oil fields (with 40 percent). Pakistan, Malaysia, Russia and France also have holdings. Extensive exploration for oil in Sudan began in the mid-70s. Chevron spent $1.2 billion, and discovered oil fields in the South, but then decided that it made more sense to call for sanctions against Sudan instead. In 1998 Chevron estimated that “Sudan had more oil than Iran and Saudi Arabia together.”

Joe Biden is famous for calling for military intervention in Sudan — as is Hillary Clinton — so figuring out who exactly is really backing JEM has never been more mission critical. –more–

Faina’s crew abandons ship: Report
Fri, 06 Feb 2009 19:19:43 GMT

Engine failure has forced MV Faina’s crew to abandon ship.
An arms-laden Ukrainian freighter, recently released by Somali pirates, fails to set sail for Kenya due to serious technical problems.

Pirate spokesman Sugule Ali later claimed that the vessel had been carrying arms for Sudanese Christian opposition groups and that they were intended for use the Muslim majority and President Omar al-Bashir’s administration. …

One military official, Abdulle Hassan Amin, speculated on Thursday that Sudanese soldiers might attempt to blow the ship up in order to eliminate the possibility of the weapons falling in the wrong hands after its arrival at Mombasa.–more–
