Ahmadinejad demands trial of Israeli leaders

It is becoming clear that Iran is a regional power, and Ahmadinejad increasingly sounds very confident. Yesterday he called for the trial of Israel’s western allies all suggesting some solid strategic relationships: Russia, China, Turkey, Pakistan? Or is he simply speaking for the zeitgeist of the world?

The huge number of civilian casualties in the densely-populated coastal sliver has provoked widespread outrage around the globe.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urges the international court of justice to prosecute Israeli leaders for “war crimes” in Gaza.

In a Friday address to an emergency Arab summit on the Gaza war, President Ahmadinejad said Israeli leaders are responsible for the death and injury of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children.

“It is most essential that Israel’s political and military leaders stand trial for the acts of genocide they have committed against Palestinians,” said the Iranian president in Doha.

Twenty-one days after the beginning of the Israeli air and ground assault on Gaza, some 1,170 Palestinians have been killed and more than 5,200 others have been injured.

The UN General Assembly said Thursday that Israel had brazenly breached international law in Gaza including “disproportionate military force; attacks on civilian targets, including homes, mosques, universities, schools.”

The United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted in 1948, asserts that “killing members of the group and causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group” are among acts that make case for genocide and crime against humanity.

“If Israeli echelons were brought to justice for the war crimes they committed during the Second Lebanon War in 2006, there would have been no crisis in Gaza today,” said President Ahmadinejad. –more–
