Israel is losing Turkey

with 2 comments

Tel Aviv was furious about Turkey’s bottom-to-top criticism of the military operation that is continuing in Gaza and Israel’s unwillingness to listen to Turkey’s — and the world’s — suggestions that it halt the operation immediately. “Is Tel Aviv losing Ankara?” is the first question that comes to mind.

An analysis published yesterday in prestigious Israeli daily Haaretz penned by Barak Ravid gave the answer as a clear “Yes, unfortunately!” “Israel’s Gaza operation has put an end to the honeymoon period in Turkish-Israeli relations and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s good relationship with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,” Ravid claimed. A particular line in Ravid’s article shows, if not denied by Israel or Turkey, that Ankara has already adopted a diplomacy of “no political contacts.” Though Turkey is communicating and cooperating with Israel on a diplomatic level about a possible truce in Gaza, Turkey’s foreign minister rejected an offer from Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni several days ago to visit the Turkish capital. Ravid claimed that Ankara’s official response was, “If she doesn’t want to talk about a cease-fire, she shouldn’t come.” Previously, Olmert received a similar cold shoulder from Erdoğan, who didn’t answer a phone call from the Israeli prime minister.

Turkish Premier Says Israel Caused Humanity Tragedy By Using Excessive Force
Speaking at an opening ceremony in the southern Turkish province of Antalya, Erdogan said, “Israel, unfortunately, led to a humanity tragedy in the Gaza Strip by using excessive force. I believe that this tragedy would cause many problems in Israel itself. Israel will be cursed for the children and the defenseless women who died under bombs. Israel will be cursed for tears shed by mothers.”
