Turkey: Israel’s Gaza ground attack unacceptable

Erdogan may call off regular joint Turkish-Israeli military maneuvers

Turkish prime minister breaks diplomatic bounds

The close, longstanding Turkish-Israel relationship may be the first strategic casualty of Israel’s Gaza offensive against Hamas. Monday, Jan. 5, Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan outdid many of the Jewish state’s enemies in vituperation when he accused Israel of “perpetrating inhuman actions which would bring it to self-destruction. Allah will sooner or later punish those who transgress the rights of innocents,” he said. If his hostility toward Israel persists, the fallout for American Middle East policies and Israel’s defense position in the region will be far-reaching.

Israel’s Gaza ground attack unacceptable

“Israel’s launch of a ground incursion despite all our calls has aroused indignation and further increased our concerns. We find Israel’s launch of a ground incursion — despite warnings by the international community and reaction within international public opinion – unacceptable, and we condemn it,” the Foreign Ministry said.

“It is obvious that escalating the tension will bring no use to anybody. Looking for a resolution to the problem through military means will yield no result other than more blood and tears. We are once more calling for an end to Israel’s military operation without leading to more loss of lives and without making the region more unstable; for an immediate end to hostility; and for a permanent cease-fire,” the Foreign Ministry statement said. “We expect the UN Security Council to immediately intervene in the situation and take the necessary steps to bring the incidents under control,” it concluded.

“Blood brings more blood. The US, which is the biggest supporter of Israel, is allegedly fighting against global terrorism. Supposedly, it came to Afghanistan and Iraq to do this. The biggest provocateur of global terrorism in the world is Israel. Success in the fight against terrorism will not be possible as long as Israel’s provocations continue,” Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Şahin was quoted as saying on Saturday in Antalya.
