West Bank: New weapons used against demonstrators

with 3 comments

International Solidarity Movement

The green bullet contains an unknown chemical substance.Since the start of the massacre on Gaza (27 December 2009), the Israeli army has been testing new types of weapons in several villages around West Bank. There are two new types of bullets and one new type of teargas canister.

One small bullet, known by its caliber size as “0.22″, does not make a sound when fired. The bullet can only be heard by a low sweeping noise in the air as it passes. The low caliber allows the bullet to easily enter the body and cause internal bleeding. The bullet can enter a body from approximately 50 meters. Until now, 7 people have been shot with the “0.22″ in Bi’lin, Ni’lin, and Budrus. Several from Bi’lin and Ni’lin have this bullet lodged in their knees, one bullet went through a demonstrator’s leg and another demonstrator was shot in the stomach (causing internal bleeding).

Too small to be considered live ammunition by Israeli authorities, the 0.22 caliber bullet is just as deadly

Don’t get taken alive, Israeli soldiers told

Israeli soldiers fighting in Gaza this month were ordered to kill themselves rather than be captured, according to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot. Troops were also told to kill any Israeli soldier they saw being taken by Hamas. No matter what happens, no one will be kidnapped,” the paper quotes one unnamed company commander as telling his troops before the battle began. “We will not have a Gilad Shalit 2,” he said.

Shalit, an Israeli corporal taken prisoner three years ago, is still being held by Hamas. The militant group is demanding the release of more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including hundreds convicted of terrorism, in exchange for him.

The newspaper quotes similar orders given in different field units which apparently reflect a new army policy. In the past, there were standing instructions, known as “Hannibal mode”, for firing at a vehicle bearing soldiers into captivity. The idea was to disable the vehicle and permit a rescue team to reach it, even it meant putting the captured soldier’s life at risk.

The new orders tighten those instructions, by apparently permitting the vehicle to be blown up. A soldier in a commando unit which operated behind Hamas lines said his unit was equipped with “special weapons”. According to the unnamed cammando: “we were instructed to use them also against any vehicle carrying a kidnapped soldier.”

A company commander told the newspaper that he had instructed his men to resist being taken prisoner “even if this costs you your life”. Israel’s Channel Ten television broadcast a recording from a battalion commander to his men just before they entered the Gaza Strip in which he says that one of Hamas’ principal goals was to capture soldiers in order to gain the freedom of imprisoned terrorists. “No soldier from the battalion will be kidnapped even if that means he blows up on his own grenade together with whoever wants to take him.”  –more–

Israel admits using phosphorus bombs during war in Lebanon
By Meron Rappaport, Haaretz Correspondent

Israel has acknowledged for the first time that it attacked Hezbollah targets during the second Lebanon war with phosphorus shells. White phosphorus causes very painful and often lethal chemical burns to those hit by it, and until recently Israel maintained that it only uses such bombs to mark targets or territory.[...]

The International Red Cross is of the opinion that there should be a complete ban on phosphorus being used against human beings and the third protocol of the Geneva Convention on Conventional Weapons restricts the use of “incendiary weapons,” with phosphorus considered to be one such weapon.

Israel and the United States are not signatories to the Third Protocol.

In November 2004 the U.S. Army used phosphorus munitions during an offensive in Faluja, Iraq. Burned bodies of civilians hit by the phosphorus munitions were shown by the press, and an international outcry against the practice followed.

EDWIN STARR lyrics – War

.

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y’all

.

War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

.

Ohhh, war, I despise
Because it means destruction
Of innocent lives

.

War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives

.

I said, war, huh
Good God, y’all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

US seeking ‘vigorous diplomacy with Iran’

Susan Rice says the US favors vigorous diplomacy with Iran.

The US ambassador to the UN says the Obama administration would engage in direct “vigorous” diplomacy with Iran over its nuclear program.

Shortly after a meeting with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on her first day in office, Susan Rice said Barack Obama’s administration “look forward to engaging in vigorous diplomacy that includes direct diplomacy with Iran.”

The administration of former US President had been pushing for a fourth round of UN sanctions against Iran over its nuclear activities to add to the three resolutions already issued.

Rice’s Monday remarks come in stark contrast with the policies of the era of George W. Bush and in line with President Obama’s pledge to enter into direct negotiations with Iranian leaders over the country’s nuclear impasse.–more–

Obama – Afghanistan and Pakistan will distract from Israel

Obama’s Vietnam

Hey, hey, BHO, how many years until we go?

by Justin Raimondo

Ateam of rivals” is how the Obama administration is being portrayed by the head-over-heels media, which started out by likening the new president to Lincoln and may end up comparing him – favorably – to God. A more appropriate phrase would be “team of retreads”: Hillary at State, Gates still at Defense, and all the usual suspects lording it over their regional fiefdoms.

The appointment of George Mitchell, whose success at helping settle the Irish imbroglio suggests some skill at managing impossible situations, has evoked hope in those who pine for a more open-mined – and evenhanded – approach to the problem of Palestine. It is a hope I share.

Yet I’m not optimistic, for two very good reasons: Dennis Ross, whose appointment as plenipotentiary for Middle Eastern affairs seems to undercut what is likely to be the Mitchell approach, and Richard Holbrooke, whose dual domain of Afghanistan and Pakistan will be the focus of U.S. military action in the coming years. Specifically, more than 14 years – at least, that’s what Holbrooke told us in a pre-election piece in Foreign Affairs magazine:

“The situation in Afghanistan is far from hopeless. But as the war enters its eighth year, Americans should be told the truth: it will last a long time – longer than the United States’ longest war to date, the 14-year conflict (1961-75) in Vietnam.”  –more–

Biden sees Afghanistan ‘uptick’

Warns of more casualties as U.S. ratchets up troop levels

(Contact)
Monday, January 26, 2009

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said Sunday that there will be an “uptick” in American casualties in Afghanistan as the U.S. military increases its presence in that country, which he characterized as “a real mess.”

The vice president’s prediction prompted outrage from liberal antiwar groups who characterized it as “cavalier,” although a leading scholar at a Washington neoconservative think tank called the Biden remarks an overdue recognition of reality.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai foreshadowed other difficulties Sunday with any “surge” of U.S. forces into his country, condemning a U.S. operation he said killed 16 Afghan civilians and demanding greater Afghan control of U.S. military operations.  –more–

Afghanistan Britain is wasting the lives of its soldiers, Ashdown warns

independent

By Brian Brady, Whitehall Editor
Sunday, 25 January 2009

The former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown has accused ministers of  “wasting the lives” of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan, claiming the international community did not have a plan to bring peace to the country.

As President Barack Obama named his envoy to the war-torn country, Lord Ashdown issued a grim warning that the “scandal” of inadequate planning threatened Nato’s ability to take advantage of victories over the Taliban. Lord Ashdown, who had once been earmarked as a UN representative in Afghanistan, said insufficient military and aid resources had been committed to the country. He warned that a resolution of its problems would not be reached without better international co-ordination and an agreement involving major powers.

He added: “I fear that we are now – and it is a scandal – wasting the lives of our young men and women whom we are putting in the frontline in the most difficult circumstances when our political leaders have failed to produce any kind of plan that can take advantage of the victories they win over the Taliban at great cost. If you speak to senior commanders in Afghanistan, you will find they are saying the same thing. They are winning the battle, often at great cost in death and mutilation of our soldiers, but I am afraid to say the international community has failed to take advantage of the victories they have gained.”

.

And from a 15 months ago in the Telegraph:

Afghanistan is lost, says Lord Ashdown

A Taliban fighter in Afghanistan?s south. Afghanistan is lost, says Lord Ashdown

A Taliban fighter in Afghanistan’s south

Nato has “lost in Afghanistan” and its failure to bring stability there could provoke a regional sectarian war “on a grand scale”, according to Lord Ashdown.

The former United Nations High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina delivered his dire prediction after being proposed as a new “super envoy” role in Afghanistan.

Lord Ashdown said: “We have lost, I think, and success is now unlikely.”

Israeli Professor:’We Could Destroy All European Capitals’

By Nadim Ladki

(IAP News) — An Israeli professor and military historian hinted that Israel could avenge the holocaust by annihilating millions of Germans and other Europeans.

Speaking during an interview which was published in Jerusalem Friday, Professor Martin Van Crevel said Israel had the capability of hitting most European capitals with nuclear weapons.

“We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets of our air force.”

Creveld, a professor of military history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, pointed out that “collective deportation” was Israel’s only meaningful strategy towards the Palestinian people.

“The Palestinians should all be deported. The people who strive for this (the Israeli government) are waiting only for the right man and the right time. Two years ago, only 7 or 8 per cent of Israelis were of the opinion that this would be the best solution, two months ago it was 33 per cent, and now, according to a Gallup poll, the figure is 44 percent.”

Creveld said he was sure that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wanted to deport the Palestinians.

“I think it’s quite possible that he wants to do that. He wants to escalate the conflict. He knows that nothing else we do will succeed.”

Asked if he was worried about Israel becoming a rogue state if it carried out a genocidal deportation against Palestinians, Creveld quoted former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan who said “Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother.”

Creveld argued that Israel wouldn’t care much about becoming a rogue state.

“Our armed forces are not the thirtieth strongest in the world, but rather the second or third. We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that this will happen before Israel goes under.”

‘No deal can stop Hamas from rearming’
Sun, 25 Jan 2009 19:35:55 GMT

Hamas says it will not accept any agreement which prevent the transfer of arms to the movement which ‘is necessary for defending Gazans’.

A long term agreement “will kill the resistance, which is the Palestinian people’s legitimate right as long as the occupation continues to exist,” Ismail Radwan, a Hamas spokesman was quoted by the Yediot Ahronot as saying Sunday.

The remarks were made while a Hamas delegation is in Cairo to negotiate a lasting Egyptian-brokered ceasefire with Israel.

Osama Hamdan, a Hamas representative in Lebanon, earlier reiterated that nobody is entitled to deprive the movement from rearming.–more–

Israel resorts to animals against Hezbollah
Sun, 25 Jan 2009 19:02:09 GMT

Fears over Hezbollah’s moves against Israel have prompted the regime’s military to resort to using antelopes to fight the Lebanese movement.

The animals have been deployed to the northern borders of Israel to clear the foliage which the military fears could function as cover Hezbollah fighters, the daily Ha’aretz reported.

Antelopes are known for their ability to eat large quantities of vegetations.–more–
