Widespread anger in Egypt at Mubarak regime
.
In the wake of the Gaza war
Johannes Stern reports from Cairo 24 January 2009
.
Muhammad lights up a cigarette and quietly utters an oath directed at Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. The 25-year-old expresses what many Egyptians think at present: “Mubarak is a swine who has worked together with Israel to turn Gaza into a prison and is responsible for the suffering of the Palestinians.”
.
The student from downtown Cairo continues to speak harshly about the government. Today, three days after Israeli troops began to withdraw from the Gaza Strip, he remains angry and criticizes the role played by Egypt in the Gaza conflict. “Probably Mubarak gave [Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi] Livni permission to attack Hamas, which he regards as a thorn in his side.”
.
In fact, Livni met Mubarak two days prior to the Israeli attack and, according to a report in the Israeli daily Haa’retz, Egyptian government officials were informed in advance of the planned offensive.
.
Many other Cairo residents share Muhammad’s anger and revulsion. They are shocked by the crimes committed by Israel during its three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip and furious with the Egyptian government, which—in the midst of the Hamas-Fatah fighting in June 2007—blocked its own border with the enclave and effectively turned the densely-populated region into a prison camp. BBC ‘open to Gaza appeal rethink’
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has said it is open to reconsidering its earlier decision not to telecast a charity appeal for funds for Palestinians in Gaza. . The chief operating officer of the BBC, under fire for its refusal to air the appeal, said a reversal of the decision was possible if another request to air the appeal was made. . “We never say never and clearly, if the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) came to us with another request when things have calmed down and we didn’t have the same worries about the controversial nature of this, we would look at it again in that light,” Caroline Thompson told Al Jazeera on Sunday. –More– |
Gaza awakens the past and revives the Palestinian cause
This is the point, Gaza awakened stored up frustration. It is the bloback from relentless spin.

I was thinking today how one event sets off the collective memory of people to remind them of past things they knew but have stored in the back of their minds. It may occur when the issue in focus has a long history in which it becomes an almost normal occurrence in your everyday life even if it is unacceptable and a crime. I find it very disturbing how the human psyche can become accustomed to a certain bad event or issue basically a negative adaptation mixed with apathy.

According to Palestinian medical sources, Jarboe died on Sunday from injuries suffered last week after an Israeli naval gunboat opened fire to prevent fishing boats from coming outside Gaza’s port, a few hours after Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire. This is what happened to the Palestinian cause across the decades. It is something we live with everyday, we hear every other day a Palestinian died or was wrongly imprisoned and then we move on with life. We know it is happening but this abnormal situation and disorder was accepted by many as if it just of one these things that happen around the world.

If you show loyalty to the state no enquiries will be made
And so many slip through the net. Murderers, Pedophiles, Rapists and muggers. It becomes a redemption. And everything is outsourced. There evolves a loyalty to a clan of elitists.
Image matters a lot. And so everyone is judged on facade not substance. These are the times we live in.
Nationalism replaced religious fervour. Although in Israel they seem combined. The result is enemies that became the same. The docile Palestinians became Hamas, The docile Shia of Lebanon became Hizbollah = ‘The Party of God’. Iraq’s secular Baathist regime is now Shia and Sunni groups. The Iranian Ayatollahs were born from the 1954 CIA coup.
Report: Gaza war reverses drop in anti-Semitism

What seemed like a good article had to insert, after this excerpt, blame on Arabs for inciting anti semitism. Dear oh Dear, try telling that to the rest of the world. Or have Israelis to be kept in a cocoon of hate.
While 2008 saw decline in anti-Semitic incidents worldwide compared to previous year, Israel’s military operation in Gaza triggered surge in anti-Jewish sentiment. Researchers believe situation will worsen in 2009

The Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip has prompted a sharp increase in the number of anti-Semitic incidents worldwide, after 2008 saw a drop in anti-Jewish sentiments globally. .
Western Europe, and mostly France, constituted the focal point for anti-Semitic events; while in the United States anti-Semitism has grown in light of the global financial crisis.
.
The statistics were revealed in a report published Sunday by the Coordination Forum for Countering Anti-Semitism, a body sponsored by the Jewish Agency, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry for Diaspora Affairs.

.
The report’s authors estimated that as the outcome of the Gaza operation becomes clearer and with the financial crisis widening, another wave of anti-Semitism should be expected in the coming year.
.
According to the report, some 250 anti-Semitic incidents have been recoded globally in last January, compared to 80 in the same period last year. The attacks were mostly lead by Muslims, mainly in France, Germany, Belgium, Scandinavia and the United States.
.
Jewish communities suffered assaults on synagogues and local institutions, as well as vandalism against private houses and businesses.
.
Numerous rallies were held against Israel in the last month, and these included violent anti-Semitic propaganda and Nazi comparisons.

Is it all going to spiral out of control?
More and more of us are out of work, there is the time to demonstrate.
Many Arab countries arrest the demonstrators, as Israel does.
But in Europe there does not seem to be much official resistance. No doubt what has happened is abhorrent. But that is not enough to explain the outpouring of grief and anger. It is a built up resentment, born from the daily dose of spin that the media has applied.
The years of repression against the Palestinians, the Madoffs, and the war on terror. I know Israel is capable of turning on a dime. It is hand in glove with the powerful in world jewry. And the entire empire could sink.
They can buy time, they can present a peace agreement, but unless there are fundamental changes then an eruption is imminent.
Fundamental changes mean an end to militarism. First and foremost. Then reconsider debt enslavement, speculation, Fiat money and outsourcing.
All ethnocentric viewpoints are history. Yet this is the cornerstone of Jewish thought. There can be a bright future if the priorities are right.
Stop promoting people because of patriotic nationalism! It is a license to kill. And its the innocent who are getting killed. Stop collective punishment, on races and on families!
Of course by changing tack all sorts of mobility will arise. Old stalwarts from a past era will be redundant. New faces will arrive. Remember the 60′s anti vietnam era. An entire cultural revolution blossomed. New writers with new thoughts.
We are simply fighting for Fiat Money, in concert with apartheid. A coalition of religion and bankers.

BBC’s Glasgow Offices Occupied
Gaza sunk the BBC. Protests everywhere because the BBC refused to air a charity appeal for Gaza.
I have just received news from activists that they have occupied the Glasgow offices of the BBC. The backlash against the BBC has been unprecedented. Having first slavishly followed the Israeli propaganda line, the BBC is now denying the collection of much needed aid for the long-suffering denizens of Gaza . This is not a trivial matter: as Tony Benn put it, people will die as a consequence of the BBC’s choices. And this in this case, its choices have been dictated by the Israeli embassy.
