The reasons for Russia stalling on Georgian withdrawal: Persian Gulf is the real flashpoint

If Russia is stalling on the Georgian ceasefire, by not withdrawing troops, what are its concerns? (Although according to reports Sarkozy and Rice have agreed to Russian troops remaining in Georgia until international peacekeepers arrive)

Given the state of Russia’s friendship with the west, it must feel closer to Iran than ever.

Iran is nervously watching an unprecedented naval build up in the Gulf. Look at the headlines at the Iranian Presstv!

Iran monitoring Persian Gulf movements

[...]“All coastal movements in the region are being carefully monitored,” Rear Adm. Sayyari said Sunday.

Rear Adm. Sayyari also warned on Thursday that Iran’s naval forces are fully equipped to defend the country’s sea borders ‘with all their might’.

His remarks come amid reports suggesting that an armada of US and European naval vessels had been stationed in the Persian Gulf in an unprecedented build-up.

The recent introduction of House Resolution 362 – which ‘demands’ that the US president make strenuous efforts to prohibit “the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products” as well as “imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran…”

Georgia offers Russia a land route to Iran via Armenia. Armenia presumably couldn’t say no, it already has an economic blockade by its neighbours Azerbaijan and Turkey. Which leaves Armenia with no other borders BUT Iran and Georgia.

Of the last two wars started by the West: Lebanon and Georgia, both times the West had no idea of the preperation or capabilities of its adversaries.

Ukraine is also a cause for concern, not that it would choose to start anything with Russia, but it would support the US and NATO in any conflict.

Turkey is making calls for the US not to do anything unilaterally.

In summary:

A spark could have a domino effect. The neocon whitehouse is looking at losing its control over Europe because of Oil supply routes, and its economy and its outlook is dire.

The focus is surely on the western naval armada in the Persian Gulf. In fact Georgia is pale by comparison for the west.

By all the emphasis in the media on Georgia perhaps we the public are being distracted (duped) from the real big flashpoint, Iran.

Russia is in a fighting mood:

Debka (contrary to reputation) has been reliable throughout the Georgia crisis.
